Introduction

“Wilderness” areas are part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. They were designated by Congress to protect and preserve natural resources for future generations. Each area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and any agency having jurisdiction immediately prior to designation. See 16 USC § 1131.

Wilderness Areas by Region

For convenience, the following Wilderness areas are organized by regions within the California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW).  We’ve included a list of common species for hunting and links to general information, maps, and any special restrictions, e.g. partial closures.  Warning shot!!!  Click here for general regulations for using BLM land, waterbodies, or facilities, which are in addition to all applicable Federal, State, and local laws.
