California Hunting on BLM Land (Bureau of Land Management)

Archery for California hunting seasons.

On this page, hunters will find a list of over 100 places for California hunting on BLM land. If you’re not familiar with “BLM,” it’s the Bureau of Land Management–an agency within the U.S. Department of Interior. Under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 (FLPMA), they have to maintain an inventory of BLM land and resources. Each parcel has to be managed in compliance with a Resource Management Plan (RMP). Those parcels are sometimes referred to as (1) Management Areas, (2) Recreation Areas, and (3) Wilderness.

When California hunting on BLM is allowed, you have to comply with general State hunting regulations, general BLM regulations, and the RMP for each location (see 43 USC § 1701). Here are links to the common species (and minimum number of BLM locations) in California: quail (77), rabbits (70), doves (67), deer (59), chukar (26), band-tailed pigeon (20), black bear (18), wild pig (18), turkey (18), ducks (17), tree squirrels (15), grouse (14), geese (11), pronghorn antelope (9), bighorn sheep (8), pheasant (5), snipe (4), and elk (2). We include the parcel name, field office contact information, the county, common species, and any other relevant info we could find (hunting areas, links, and maps). For convenience, we’ve organized BLM land by Regions of the California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW).

CDFW Regions

  • Region 1 for Northern California hunting on BLM land.
  • Region 2 for North Central California hunting on BLM land.
  • Region 3 for the Bay Delta of California hunting on BLM land.
  • Region 4 for Central California hunting on BLM land.

Warning shot!!!  Don’t forget to review our summary of general BLM regulations and any area-specific restrictions for California hunting on BLM land.
