California goose hunting seasons for brant and California Brant Special Management Area

The Waterfowl Zone in which you are hunting determines the seasons, bag limits, and possession limits. One of the zones has several Special Management Areas (SMAs). There are two SMAs for hunting black brant. The one for Northern California covers Del Norte, Humboldt and Mendocino counties. On this page, we cover the other California Brant Special Management Area, which covers the balance of the state. Here, you’ll find seasons, bag limits, possession limits, legal boundaries, and maps.


The Northern Brant Special Management Area covers Del Norte, Humboldt and Mendocino counties. The Balance of State Brant SMA covers to the rest of California. See 14 CCR § 502(b)(6)(F)-(G).


Daily Bag an Possession Limits

In this Section, you’ll find the daily bag and possession limits in California for black brant. For all other Ducks and Geese, the daily bag and possession limits are the same.

Northern Brant SMA

The daily bag limit for black brant in the Northern Brant SMA is two. The possession limit is triple the daily bag limit. See 14 CCR § 502(d)(6)(C)(6).

Balance of State Brant SMA

The daily bag limit for black brant in the Balance of State Brant SMA is two. The possession limit is triple the daily bag limit. See 14 CCR § 502(d)(6)(C)(7).

Humboldt Bay South Spit SMA

California Brant Special Management Area for South SpitThe seasons for all ducks and geese in the Humboldt Bay South Spit SMA are closed during the brant seasons. See 14 CCR § 502(d)(6)(C)(2).

Brant (Goose)

Northern Brant SMA

The season for black brant in the Northern Brant SMA opens on November 8, and lasts for 37 days. See 14 CCR § 502(d)(6)(B)(6).

Balance of State Brant SMA

The season for black brant in the Balance of State Brant SMA opens November 9, and lasts for 37 days. See 14 CCR § 502(d)(6)(B)(7).

Waterfowl

Humboldt Bay South Spit SMA

The seasons for all Ducks and Geese in the Humboldt Bay South Spit SMA is closed during brant season. See 14 CCR § 502(d)(6)(B)(2).

Morro Bay SMA

California Brant Special Management Area for Morro BayThe seasons for all Ducks and Geese in the Morro Bay SMA opens with the black brant season and continues through the end of waterfowl season. See 14 CCR § 502(d)(6)(B)(4).

Youth Hunts

California Brant Special Management Area for youth hunts.Youth are allowed to hunt all ducks and geese, including brant, during the seasons established for the waterfowl zone in which the SMA is located. Youth are hunters under the age of 18. The daily bag and possession limits are the same as the regular seasons. See 14 CCR § 502(e)(1)(A).
